Identifying, reporting and resolving interference
Electromagnetic interference (EMC) affects all radio amateurs – whether as the source of the interference or as those affected by it. Faulty power supplies, poorly shielded electronics, LED lamps or powerline adapters (PLC) can cause massive interference on amateur radio bands. Conversely, an amateur radio station that is not properly installed can also affect other devices.
Locating and identifying interference
The first step when interference occurs is to systematically locate the source. Many sources of interference in the immediate vicinity can be detected using simple equipment such as a portable receiver and a directional antenna. Typical sources include switching power supplies, solar inverters, electric fences, street lighting and various household appliances.
Reporting interference to OFCOM
If a source of interference is identified that contravenes the statutory EMC regulations, a report of interference can be submitted to the Federal Office of Communications (BAKOM). BAKOM will investigate the case and may order measures to be taken. Important: Document the interference carefully, noting the frequency, time, direction and, if possible, recordings.
Non-compliant devices are listed by OFCOM in a public database. Anyone importing devices is personally responsible for ensuring that they comply with Swiss standards.
